1. 4 Days Danakil Depression Tours from Mekele
ITINERARY
Day 1: Fly to Mekelle-Drive to Dodom-Volcano
We drive from Mekele to – Dodom. We start early drive to Dodom (at the base of Erta Ale). Leave after an early breakfast, possible at 07:30. This is may be one of the worst roads in the world. The 70 km distance may take about 5 hrs passing through changing landscape of solidified lava, rock, sand and occasional palm lined oasis. After you pass several small hamlets scattered here and there in this desert land, Dodom is about 9.5km from Erta Ale and it takes about 3 hrs trekking. Early dinner around 17:00 and trek up to Ertale at 20:00 hours. Camels transport all the camping materials and some food (sleeping materials like light mattresses and mat and water) to the rim of the volcano, where we spend the night watching the dramatic action of the boiling lava. Erta Ale ranks one of the most alluring and physically challenging natural attractions anywhere in Ethiopia. It is a shield volcano with a base diameter of 30 km and 1km square caldera at its summit. Erta Ale contains the world’s only permanent lava lake. Overnight on the top of the mountain. Erta Ale is 613 meters, with a lava lake, one of only five in the world, at the summit. It is notable for being the longest existing lava lake, present since the early years of the twentieth century. O/n camping on the mountain
Day 2: Dodem –Hammedele,
Descend from Erta Ale around 9 am Dodom – Hamd Ela. Leave back to Dodom after an early breakfast, if possible at 07:00. You will reach latest at 10:30 am at the camp, time to relax. After drive to reach Hamad Ela, better village with a total population about 500 people. O/n Hamedela( camping)
Day 3: Hamedela-Mekele
Morning tour Drive to Ragad (Asebo), the place where the localities are mining salt. Look the activity of breaking the salt from the ground, cutting in to rectangular pieces and loading on camels. You drive ahead to Dallol and visit the difference landscape formed by volcanic activity, Dallol + Lake Assal + camel caravans. Excursion to Dallol (116 meter below sea level, one of the lowest places in the world) colorful salts mining, visit Lake Assal, follow up camel caravans and walk with the Afar people. Drive back to Hamedela and proceed to Mekele.
Day 04: Addis – Departure
This day you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Addis. In the evening attend a folkloric dinner where you will have a chance to taste several national dishes and watch dances of the various ethnic groups of Ethiopia. The traditional coffee ceremony will also be served. Later you will be transferred to the airport for your departure.

Day 03: Arba Minch- Chencha Dorze Villages
After breakfast you will take a boat trip in Lake Lake Chamo, to visit the crocodile market, it is a local name for a place in Lake chamo that the crocodiles went out of the lake and chill, there is no buying or selling, also you will see hippos and different kinds of birds later driving to the Dorze village. This is one of the many Omo Valley tribes you’ll be visiting. The Dorze Tribe set high up in the Gughe Mountains where we see the traditional Dorze beehive shaped huts recognized as one of the visually attractive structural houses by the UNESCO and later we will be back to Arba Minch for lunch then we will be driving to the town of Konso. Day 04: Konso – Turmi
After having your breakfast you will have a chance of seeing the Konso village, one of the UNESCO site in Ethiopia know by their terracing. One of the best types of coffee for the country is also from this village. Proceed to the Bana village. The Bana who are indigenous pastoral and semi-nomadic people living in the harsh environment of lower Omo Valley. The men often have their hair dressed up with a colorful clay cap that is decorated with feathers. Then proceed to the Turmi where the Hamer people lives. Overnight in Turmi.
Day 05: Turmi- Omorate (75kms 2hrs drive)
After having your breakfast, you will have an excursion to Omorate to visit the Dassanech people ‘people of the Delta’, who lives on the northern shore of Lake Turkana. Visit and drive back to Turmi for lunch then drive to Jinka. Overnight in Jinka.
Day 06: Drive Jinka – Mago – Jinka – Addis Ababa
Take a day excursion to Mago National Park to visit the Mursi village. The Mursi are one of the exotic ethnic groups in Ethiopia. They live in very low huts made of straw leaves. The women like to wear terra cotta on their enormously stretched lower lips and ear lobes. Drive back to Jinka for lunch. Drive to the Ari people, the largest population in the lower omo valley. This event is mostly for girls and young women, which they await very eagerly every year. It is unique to the people in the state of Tigrai in northern Ethiopia. The name of the festival “Ashenda” comes from the name of a tall grass that the girls make in to a skirt and wear it around their waist as a decoration. Overnight in Mekele.

Ethiopian Great Run is 10 KM annual road running event which held in Addis Ababa Ethiopia in late of November and this competition was first envisioned by neighbors Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie, Peter Middlebrook and Abi Masefield in late October 2000, following Haile’s return from the 2000 Summer Olympics. Middlebrooks established the proposal which Masefield presented to Brendan Foster, originator of the Great Run series at the advice of her mother and close friend, Andrea Won for. Richard Nerurkar arrived in March 2001 at which point Peter Middlebrooks shared the idea with former British Ambassador to Ethiopia Myles Wick stead, who subsequently championed the race. The elite race attracts a number of prominent runners. Haile Gebrselassie won the inaugural men’s race and at the second edition many of the country’s top long-distance runners competed, with Gebre Egzyabher Gebremariam, Sileshi Sihine and Kenenisa Bekele comprising the top three in the men’s race and Worknesh Kidane and Tirunesh Dibaba taking first and second in the women’s race. Although more established competitors do take part, the race is known for highlighting the best of Ethiopia’s up-and-coming running talent – many of the race’s podium finishers, little-known at the time, have gone on to achieve success on the global stage

Later, you will take a boat cruise on Lake Tana to visit the 14th century Monastery of Ura Kidane Mihret which is the most famous of the Zege peninsula monasteries. Afternoon, you will drive to the village of Tis Isat to see the Blue Nile falls. (Note that the volume of the water could be minimal because of the construction of the new dam.) In 615, Muhammed’s wife and cousin sought refuge at Axum (Aksum) with a number of these followers. This group was fleeing from Mecca’s leading tribe, the reactionary Kuraysh, who sent emissaries to bring them back to Arabia, but the Negus Armah protected them The building of the first mosque in Africa, Nejashi Mosque plus Ethiopia(Habesha/Land of the burnt skin) being a chosen land by Prophet Mohammed(PBUH) for refugees from the Qurayshis makes Ethiopia a chosen land known as “The Land with a just King”. Other sites like the Dana, Kerem, Aba Getiye, and Geta were scholars and “Saints” who taught the religion of Islam in their shrines and were very influential in the expansion of Islam in Ethiopia.

Take a walk and drive through the streets of Mekelle. Then you will pray the Salah of Zuhr and Asr at the grand mosque of Anwar Masjid and have a halal lunch at a halal restaurant.In the afternoon, you will have a drive to Wukro, Nejashi Mosque, the first mosque in Africa since the 7th century. Day 2: Mekelle-Mehonie- Woldiya

Geta is well known for its Menzuma(Islamic Supplicating Songs), for the big and festive Mawlid that is celebrated every year, and center of Islamic teaching. Mosque, Shrine and Manuscripta can be found. Drive to Jema Nigus. Jema Nigus is a home for the great Sheikh Seid Mohammed Shafi (Seid Mujahidu/ Seid the Struggler), he was a very wise Sheikh who travelled to Mecca and Medina for Islamic Education, and even had a plan to meet the Caliph in Istanbul. This day after having your breakfast we will have some hiking to The holy shrine of sheik Hussein is located in the North Eastern parts Bale on the edge of the Wabeshebelle river,180 km from Bale mountains national park Headquarter. The shrine of sheik Hussein is named after a muslim holyman called Sheikh Hussein Bin malka,who was respected for his religion teaching, high devotion and miraculous deeds.According to local legends he was born in 12th century and lived for 250 years, 70 of wich he spent in the shrine. Pilgrims from all over the country come on foot, horseback and by mule from up to 1000km away to pay homage and to partake in a ceremony organized in memory of their religious leader. The pilgrimage take place twice a year: In June to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Sheikh Hussein and in October to celebrate the birth of the Prophet Mohammed. The pilgrimage depends on the lunar calendar, so the exact date varies each year. The shrine is located at the end of the town and is surrounded by white washed walls. Shoes are removed and left outside; long pants and long sleeved shirts should be worn.
